About St. John Lutheran Church in Libertyville

We Are a Christian Church Named for St. John!
When our church was established in 1897, it was named after the apostle John, a follower of Jesus.  Today we still follow the example of John who emphasized both truth and love.
Jesus said,
"I am the way
and the truth and the life.
  No one comes to
 the Father except
through me."
(John 14:6)

With John, we believe it is important to teach the truth that God has revealed in the Bible.  With John, we
believe that this, and everything we do, must be done in love.

Jesus said everyone will know we are his disciples by the love we have for each other.  That's why our motto is, "Spreading God's word...in truth and love!"

We Are Evangelical!
We emphasize the gospel, the good news that Jesus paid for all our sins by His suffering and death on the cross.  Because Jesus did this, we have life with God now and for all eternity in heaven when we die.  We now have meaning and purpose to our lives.

It is this gospel, or good news, that motivates us and is at the center of all that we do at St. John.

We Are Lutheran!
We agree with the teachings of Martin Luther (1483-1546), one of the people God used to restore the true teaching of the Bible in Germany in the sixteenth century.

We don't necessarily agree with everything Luther said or did, but we do agree with the doctrines he taught because they are firmly based on the Bible.  We emphasize the good news of Jesus as our Savior.

We also believe the Bible is the revealed word of God without error and, thus, is a firm foundation for everything we teach, preach, and do.

What Makes Us Unique?
"In my opinion..." is a phrase you won't hear at St. John when it comes to our beliefs.  Instead, you will hear, "The Bible tells us that..."

This is because humans are fallible.  Humans make mistakes.  Human judgment is often wrong, tainted with the desires and errors of this world.

Only the Triune God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is infallible and perfect.  Because the Bible is God's true Word, it serves as a perfect resource to teach us how God wants us to live.
