The Sacraments

Lutheran Beliefs - p. 7

The teachings of a truly Lutheran Church are based on the words written by the prophets of the Old Testament and the apostles of the New Testament.  The Bible tells us about Jesus Christ.

On this and the following pages are succinct explanations regarding some of the beliefs of the Lutheran Church.

The Sacraments
God bestows all spiritual blessings upon sinners by special means established by him.  These are the means of grace, namely the gospel in Word and sacraments.

A sacrament is a sacred act established by Christ in which the Word, connected with an earthly element, gives the forgiveness of sins.

Based on this definition, the Bible communicates two sacraments to us...Holy Baptism and Communion.

Holy Baptism

(Matthew 28:19, John 3:5-6, Titus 3:5, Mark 10:14;16:16, Acts 22:16)

Baptism is a holy act.  It is instituted by God.  Using water and God's Word, it offers and gives the forgiveness of sins, spiritual life, and eternal salvation.  It is meant for young and old, including children.

Because we are all born into sin, infants also are sinful in God's eyes and therefore need the spiritual rebirth brought about through baptism.

Holy Communion (Matthew 26:26-28, 1Corinthians 10:16-17; 11:27-28)

Holy Communion is a holy act instituted by Christ.  Together with bread and wine, we receive Jesus' true body and blood.  In this special meal, Jesus gives the forgiveness of sins, strengthens our faith, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.

God's word, as spoken to us through the Bible, clearly directs that only those who repent of their sins and receive proper instruction in the Christian faith are to be admitted to this sacrament.
