Our Story

TIME LINE

St. John Lutheran Church has been making connections in Libertyville since the horse and buggy days. Today, families drive in from every direction of Lake County to worship and work in ministry with Jesus.

1897 - We organized as St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of Libertyville as a tri-parish with Lutheran congregations in Lake Forest and Waukegan.

1905 - We built our own first church on the corner of Broadway and Park Place for $2725.49.

1923 - We grew from a dual-parish with Waukegan to a single-parish with our own pastor.

1952 - Our present church building was dedicated.

1963 - We withdrew from WELS to join the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LC-MS).

1964 - The Christian Education Building was dedicated.

1971 - We left the LC-MS as charter members of the Federation for Authentic Lutheranism.

1973 - St. John Lutheran School opened.

1975 - We rejoined the WELS!

2010 - We rededicated our renovated sanctuary and our renovated organ. We installed a new preschool playground.

TODAY - We know St. John Lutheran Church and School is about more than buildings. We are a family connecting in Christ.

Grace and truth, love and life — that's what we want you to see and hear in our congregation at St. John Lutheran Church!

WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT

As a congregation named after Jesus' disciple John, we are all about John's themes of grace and truth, love and life in Jesus.

As an evangelical Lutheran congregation, we focus on the best that we have to share — the Good News of peace and life with God. In Jesus, God sees us as righteous, right by Him! That means we get to live knowing we have God to help us and heal us, to power us and provide for us, and, most importantly, we have God to save us and deliver us from the heartache and evil of this world and to live with Him in the peace and joy of heaven! But we don't live with our heads stuck up in heaven oblivious to the world around us. With the heart of Jesus, we look to share His life and love with the people God puts into our lives — we want to share Jesus' life and love with you.

As a congregation with a Lutheran grade school for over 40 years (and now a preschool too), we have a deep commitment to teaching our children the love of God in Jesus and the wonders of God's creation around us. Whether we're teaching a Bible lesson or digging into the wonders of science or math, we see God has blessed us with a wonderful world in which to share His love.
